“A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows is God in His holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families….” (Psalm 68: 5-6)
I fell in love with Rufus the first time I met him. I had traveled across Liberia to a town on the eastern border. There I met Rufus at one of the schools where we partner. He was cute, quiet and shy, but cooperative.
My concern deepened when I heard his story. His mother had died and his father was unknown. He was living with his grandmother, who was very elderly and could not care well for him. We began praying about his home situation.
God answered our prayers when a family took him in. Last October I was so happy to meet his foster mother and see her care of him. Their home is near the school and I walked there with the Child Advocate. An older girl in the family was sitting outside cutting the rinds off oranges. She offered us oranges to eat as we sat and talked. She said how much they love Rufus as a little brother – and perhaps even spoil him! His grandmother still visits occasionally, but he insists that his foster mother is his new mother.
I was sad to learn that Rufus recently lost his sponsor. Sponsorship is important to help this family by paying his tuition and medical bills, as well as meeting some other needs.
